The purpose of an essence is to prepare clean skin for treatment by kick-starting the skin regeneration process, i.e., initiating cell turnover so that the top layer of the skin (dead skin cells) is shed to reveal “new” skin for improved radiance. The theory is that a new layer of skin cells can more easily take in the active ingredients in the treatment steps that follow (serums, boosters, and ampoules), enhancing their efficacy by creating the best possible environment for active ingredients to penetrate the skin.
Essences themselves tend to (but not always) have a water-like consistency (which is why they are often confused with toners) and only a few active ingredients with targeted effects, as opposed to treatment products, like serums, which are packed with actives. Of course, at Tata Harper Skincare, that means between 16 and 21 natural ingredients—a lot more than you’ll find in other essences.
“I like to saturate my skin—face and neck—after cleansing before I put on my serums. And you don’t have to wait for them to dry, you can layer serums on top of essences, and moisturizer on top of serums to save time in your daily skin care regimen,” Tata explained at a recent masterclass.
Tata likes to describe essences as your next generation toner. The Concentrated Brightening Essence features a powerhouse infusion of Alpha and Beta Hydroxy technology that gives the complexion a toned and refined look, helping to minimize the appearance of dark spots.
Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence is a lightweight mist that boosts skin’s natural hydration with biocompatible Hyaluronic Acid and a weightless blend of natural humectants, delivering a hydrated feel and plumper looking appearance. This is great right after cleansing, but we love to keep the 50ml in our purse for constant refreshing through the day!
